Driving Test

Once you have passed your theory test you are then able to take your practical test. Providing that you are ready and your examiner is confident of success you can now book the test. You must have passed the theory test as this gives you a number you need in order to book your practical test. It is possible to book your practical test online or by phone.

One the day of your practical test you will wait in the test centre waiting room until you are called by your examiner. You will be asked, "to read the declaration which states that your vehicle is covered by a valid policy of insurance for the test". Once you have signed this you will have to produce your provisional driving licence, or a passport or some sort of photo ID. The new licences are in two parts and you must have both parts with you on the day of your test in order to give to the examiner. You will then be asked to lead the way to the car you will be sitting the test in. You can opt to have your driving instructor in the car with you (however it is important to realise they are not permitted to give you any advice or guidance on test as this will affect the outcome). You will then, before getting into the car, be asked to complete the eyesight test, the examiner will ask you to read a number plate of a car that is not your own standing 20.5 meters away from the number plate.

After successfully reading the number plate you will now return to your own car and the examiner will ask you two questions concerning the safety of your vehicle. There are 12 questions and you will only be asked 2, however if you get both or just one wrong you will immediately get one minor fault. Ask your instructor for help on the safety questions.

You are then ready to start the driving test, the most important thing to remember is to stay calm, the more nervous you are the more mistakes you will make, ones you wouldn’t make with your instructor or even by yourself. You are aloud up to 15 minor faults, however 3 of the same fault (for example steering fault) could mean they will be converted into a serious fault and you will have failed your test. One serious or dangerous fault is enough to fail the test.

Your examiner will give you instruction in due course, and you are also aloud to ask them to repeat any instructions you do not hear or understand.

The test should last 40-50 minutes and you will be asked to complete numerous manoeuvres, which you will have exhausted with your instructor, and numerous stop and starts to make sure you can set off in a safe and suitable manor. You will also do a hill start to gage your control of your car and parking at the test centre.

You will do mock tests with your instructor to ensure you are ready and there are numerous books and dvds available to buy in order to make you confident and pass your driving test.
