Theory Test

Before you are able to take your practical driving test you must have successfully completed the theory test. To take the theory test you must be 17 and hold a valid provisional driving licence. It is possible to book your theory test online or by phone.

The theory text contains two different parts: the multiple choice section and the hazard perception test. In the first part there are 50 multiple choice questions, which are chosen at random from a collection of 1000. To pass this part of the test 43 correct answers are required within a 57 minute time frame, if you are unsure of a question you are able to skip and return to it later. The test will take place on a touch screen and each candidate will have 15 minutes of practice before the actual test in order to accustom themselves with this. The test is available in English and 20 other languages and deaf candidates are able to watch the test being signed in British Sign Language.

When you have completed this part of the theory test you will be required to do the hazard perception part of the test. Here you will watch a series of 14 one minute video clips. Each video clip will include potential hazards on the road which you must correctly identify. There are 15 hazards to identify (so one clip will contain 2 hazards as opposed to one) and you can score up to 5 points on each hazard depending on how quickly you recognize it. For the hazard perception part a score of 43 out of 75 is a pass. You will receive the result of your theory test within 30 minutes of taking the test and feedback of your results will be provided.

The combined theory and hazard perception test costs £28.50. To ensure that you pass the theory test there are many different mediums available to help you, from books to mock tests on the internet. How well you perform on these will indicate whether or not you are ready to take the driving theory test.
